KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says South Africa’s police are at war. The Mkhwanazi IDAC standoff erupted on Thursday 18 June 2026. Intelligence warned that IDAC had given itself 48 hours to arrest both Mkhwanazi and Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo. Furthermore, both generals arrived at the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria after Khumalo received a call to report there. As a result, one of the most remarkable moments in South African law enforcement history played out live on camera.
Mkhwanazi IDAC Standoff: What Happened at Brooklyn Police Station
The drama began when IDAC called Khumalo and asked him to report to Brooklyn Police Station by 3pm. Khumalo brought his lawyer James Ndebele and arrived as instructed. Furthermore, Mkhwanazi drove to the station after Khumalo confirmed the summons matched intelligence from the day before. The KZN Commissioner said he wanted to see the situation himself. Making it easy for IDAC to find him was also part of his thinking.
However, IDAC officials never arrived. Khumalo and fellow general Mzondeni Madondo waited at the station. Khumalo and Madondo gave no statements. Officers made no arrests. Not a single warrant appeared. As a result, Khumalo’s lawyer Ndebele said his clients had paid legal costs for nothing. “It is embarrassing that my clients continue to pay legal costs only for IDAC not to be present,” Ndebele said outside the station.
IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame then denied that IDAC had arrested anyone. “We wish to set the record straight that General Khumalo has not been arrested. Nor has anyone else from crime intelligence,” Mamothame said. However, Mkhwanazi challenged that denial immediately. The phone calls requesting Khumalo’s attendance were on record, he said. “The calls were made to come here. The calls were made not to come anymore,” Mkhwanazi said.
We Are at War Says Mkhwanazi in IDAC Standoff
Speaking to eNCA, Mkhwanazi said police were facing a war with many players involved. “We are facing a war and there are many players in this game,” he said. Furthermore, intelligence received on Wednesday warned that IDAC had given itself 48 hours to get both him and Khumalo behind bars. The warning did not convince him at first. However, when Khumalo called him on Thursday to confirm it was real, he drove straight to Brooklyn.
Someone had stopped IDAC from carrying out the plan, Mkhwanazi suggested. “Who stopped them, I do not know,” he said. Furthermore, he linked the summons to reports that investigators were preparing warrants against IDAC officials themselves. The move, he said, aimed to derail investigations into IDAC head Advocate Andrea Johnson.
Despite his strong words, Mkhwanazi was clear that police are not above the law. “We are not saying that we are immune from being investigated. If there are things we did wrong, by all means. But it has to be executed,” he said.
The Background to the Mkhwanazi IDAC Standoff
The standoff is the latest chapter in one of the most remarkable stories in South African policing history. IDAC arrested Khumalo in June 2025 alongside several senior crime intelligence officials. The charges involved irregular appointments and the alleged abuse of the unit’s secret service account. IDAC later released him and brought him back as head of Crime Intelligence.
Mkhwanazi came to national fame in July 2025. He held a media briefing alleging criminal networks had entered the SAPS at the highest levels. That briefing led directly to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. Since then he has been at the centre of a fierce battle within South African law enforcement. On one side are those fighting to clean up the system. On the other are those he says are protecting criminal networks inside it.
What Happens Next in the Mkhwanazi IDAC Standoff
The situation remains unclear. IDAC has denied making any arrests or issuing any warrants. Khumalo’s lawyer is demanding answers about why IDAC summoned his client and then did not follow through. Furthermore, Mkhwanazi has publicly challenged IDAC to explain itself. The Madlanga Commission continues its work alongside these events. As a result, Thursday’s drama at Brooklyn Police Station marks a major step up in the battle for South Africa’s law enforcement soul.

Editors Note IDAC has officially denied that any arrest was made or that IDAC issued any warrant of arrest against Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo or Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on Thursday 18 June 2026. The law presumes both generals innocent of any wrongdoing until proven otherwise in a court of law. Mkhwanazi, Khumalo’s lawyer James Ndebele and media reports from the scene provide the basis for all allegations in this article.
