Disgraced lawyer and reality TV personality Peet Viljoen did not get bail on Thursday 18 June 2026. The Peet Viljoen bail denied development came after his brief appearance at the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court. Furthermore, the formal bail application was postponed to Friday 26 June 2026 because verification checks had not been completed. As a result, Viljoen remains behind bars facing 400 charges of fraud, theft, corruption and perjury dating back to 2010.
Peet Viljoen Bail Denied: What Happened in Court
Viljoen appeared briefly before the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday. The bail application could not proceed. NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana confirmed the reason outside court. “We could not proceed today because there are investigations we need to do, including confirming his address,” she said. Furthermore, two addresses had been provided for Viljoen. One is in the Western Cape and one near Hartbeespoort Dam in the North West Province. As a result, police needed more time to verify where he actually lives before the bail application could formally proceed.
Viljoen’s request to be held at the Sunnyside Police Station while waiting for his bail hearing was also denied. The station commander said he could not accommodate him. As a result, Viljoen will remain in prison custody until his bail application on 26 June.
The Hugo Boss Moment That Went Viral
Viljoen’s brief court appearance generated significant attention for reasons beyond the legal proceedings. The 57-year-old arrived in court wearing a designer Hugo Boss beige and black tracksuit with matching trainers. His wife Mel Viljoen sat in the public gallery wearing a long black trench coat. Furthermore, commentary across social media reflected disbelief that a man facing 400 criminal charges chose to attend court in designer leisurewear. As a result, the image of Peet Viljoen in his Hugo Boss tracksuit became one of the most talked about moments of the week on South African social media.
What He Is Accused Of
Viljoen faces more than 400 charges including fraud, theft, forgery, perjury and contravention of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act. The charges stem from an alleged R100 million scheme to steal and sell land owned by the City of Johannesburg using forged council documents. The Hawks confirmed that investigators had been working on the matter for more than a decade. Furthermore, Hawks spokesperson Colonel Granville Meyer confirmed the arrest was executed immediately upon Viljoen’s arrival. “Just after he landed, our members arrested him for this crime. And then he appeared in court. We’ve been investigating this matter for more than 10 years,” Meyer said.
The Long Road Back to South Africa
Viljoen was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday 16 June 2026 after arriving on a United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey following approximately 100 days in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention. He and his wife Mel had left South Africa in May 2025 while the criminal matter remained active. Furthermore, the couple were arrested in the United States in March 2026 on allegations of shoplifting groceries worth more than $5,000 from a supermarket. They were subsequently detained by ICE for overstaying their visitor visas. As a result, both were deported back to South Africa. Mel returned first, weeks before her husband.
In media interviews since her return, Mel denied having any outstanding criminal charges in South Africa. She said she and Peet hoped to start over in Cape Town and had pursued a business visa in the US to launch a nail franchise called Cuccio Nails South Africa. She also claimed ICE and police targeted the couple because they were celebrities. Furthermore, she appealed to South Africans to forgive them for their past controversies.
The State Will Pull Out All Stops on 26 June
Prosecutor Willem van Zyl has made clear he plans to oppose bail vigorously at the 26 June hearing. Furthermore, van Zyl told the court he intends to use Viljoen’s social media posts as part of his opposition to bail. Questions have also emerged about how Viljoen was able to leave South Africa in May 2025 while the criminal matter was already active. As a result, the 26 June bail application is expected to be a contested and high-profile proceeding.
Mzansi Today Live will follow the bail application on 26 June and report on the outcome.
