Suspended Crime Intelligence deputy head Major General Feroz Khan was shot in Houghton, Johannesburg on Sunday night 28 June 2026. The Feroz Khan shooting happened on Third Avenue at approximately 11pm. Furthermore, two gunmen in a white Mercedes-Benz ambushed his grey Suzuki Baleno as he drove home. As a result, Khan sustained gunshot wounds to his lower body and underwent emergency surgery at Netcare Milpark Hospital. He remains in critical condition.
Feroz Khan Shooting: What Happened on Third Avenue
Khan was driving home when two unidentified assailants in a white Mercedes-Benz pulled alongside his vehicle and opened fire. The attack happened at approximately 11pm. Khan suffered gunshot wounds to his lower body. Officers rushed him to Netcare Milpark Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. At the time of publication he remained in a critical but stable condition.
Police found at least two spent bullet casings at the scene. SAPS ballistic experts processed the crime site. Officers sealed Khan’s phones in an evidence bag and handed his vehicle keys to the Flying Squad. As a result, investigators treated the scene as a high-priority crime site from the moment they arrived.
Khan’s uncle Preggy Padayachee arrived at Milpark Hospital with family members. “Whoever did this must pay for it,” Padayachee told EWN outside the hospital. Khan’s legal representative declined to speak to the media.
Two Days Before His Madlanga Commission Testimony
The timing of the attack drew immediate and intense scrutiny. Khan was due to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday 1 July 2026. His testimony was expected to span several days. Furthermore, investigators believe his evidence is central to the commission’s probe into corruption and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
In recent weeks Khan dropped all legal challenges blocking his testimony and investigators’ access to his seized electronic devices. His WhatsApp messages have already produced explosive revelations before the commission. Those messages allegedly linked him to EFF leader Julius Malema, tobacco businessman Mohamed Sayed and the alleged removal of former Inspector General of Intelligence Setlhomamaru Dintwe in 2021.
Police urged the public not to draw conclusions about the motive. “It is premature and irresponsible to speculate on any possible motive or to conclude that the incident is linked to his anticipated appearance before the Commission,” SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said. However, the Political Killings Task Team joined the investigation alongside the Gauteng Hawks and Gauteng Crime Intelligence. As a result, law enforcement is treating the shooting with the highest possible urgency.
What Khan Faced at the Feroz Khan Shooting Commission Inquiry
Khan’s commission appearance was expected to cover serious allegations. He faces questions about alleged involvement in a precious metals syndicate. In May 2026 officers arrested him alongside Gauteng Hawks head Major General Ebrahim Kadwa on charges of corruption and the unlawful possession of illicit precious metals. Both received R20,000 bail. Furthermore, his name links to the 2021 Aeroton cocaine drug bust, the tobacco industry and alleged organised crime figures including Oupa Brown Mogotsi and Vusimuzi Cat Matlala.
The commission also planned to question Khan about alleged links to Matipandile Sotheni, the alleged killer of Marius Witness D van der Merwe. As a result, the scale of allegations Khan faced at the commission was unlike anything South African law enforcement history has seen in recent years.
The High-Level Investigation Into the Feroz Khan Shooting
Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane condemned the shooting clearly and directly. “The SAPS remains resolute in protecting the rule of law and ensuring that justice prevails,” Dimpane said. She urged anyone with information to come forward. Furthermore, she wished Khan a speedy recovery and extended her thoughts to his family.
The investigation team includes the Gauteng Hawks, Gauteng Crime Intelligence, SAPS ballistic experts and the Political Killings Task Team. The PKTT is the unit mandated to investigate attacks on individuals whose attempted assassination links to their political activities or planned testimony before official bodies. As a result, its presence signals that investigators take the possibility of a targeted hit seriously.
Brown Mogotsi and a Commission Under Siege
The Feroz Khan shooting is the latest dramatic development linked to the Madlanga Commission. Earlier in June 2026, Oupa Brown Mogotsi faced arrest for allegedly staging his own assassination after appearing before the commission. Officers also arrested Khan and Kadwa in May as part of the commission’s broader investigations. Furthermore, the commission’s term has already been extended to August 2026 to handle the scale and complexity of its work. As a result, the shooting of a key witness days before his testimony marks a serious escalation in one of the most significant law enforcement inquiries in South Africa’s democratic history.
