Self-proclaimed crime intelligence agent Brown Mogotsi was arrested on Friday evening by a SAPS multidisciplinary team after appearing before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry earlier in the day. He faces charges of defeating the ends of justice linked to allegations that he staged a shooting on himself in Vosloorus in November 2025. The firearm allegedly used in the incident has been linked to murders and attempted murders.
Controversial North West businessman and self-proclaimed crime intelligence agent Oupa Brown Mogotsi was arrested on Friday 15 May 2026 hours after appearing before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria. A SAPS multidisciplinary team executed a J50 warrant of arrest against Mogotsi on Friday evening on a charge of defeating the ends of justice. He is expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 18 May 2026.
The Staged Shooting Allegation
The arrest relates to a shooting incident in Vosloorus in November 2025. At the time, Mogotsi claimed he had been the target of an assassination attempt while driving his vehicle, alleging he had been followed from a BP garage in Spruitview by an unknown male in a white bakkie. His vehicle was found riddled with multiple bullet holes and several 9mm cartridges were recovered at the crime scene.
Mogotsi’s account of events generated significant media coverage and was used by him to bolster his claims of being a target due to his alleged exposure of criminal networks within South Africa’s law enforcement structures. However, police investigations have now concluded that the shooting was allegedly staged by Mogotsi himself.
SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the arrest on Friday evening. “A SAPS multidisciplinary team has this evening executed a J50 warrant of arrest and arrested a suspect for defeating the ends of justice,” Mathe said. She added that preliminary investigations had revealed that the firearm used in the alleged incident had also been linked to other serious and violent crimes including cases of murder and attempted murder, a development that significantly escalates the gravity of the matter beyond the initial defeating the ends of justice charge.
According to reliable sources, Mogotsi also faces charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition and discharging a firearm within a municipal area, charges that had not been formally confirmed by police at the time of publication.
Earlier That Day: Madlanga Commission Dismisses Recusal Application
The arrest came on a day that was already highly significant for Mogotsi at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. Earlier on Friday, commission chairperson Mbuyiseli Madlanga dismissed Mogotsi’s application to have chief evidence leader Senior Counsel Matthew Chaskalson recused from the inquiry. The recusal application had been filed in late April and had already caused delays to Mogotsi’s testimony before the commission.
Mogotsi had argued that Chaskalson was biased and lacked impartiality, claiming the evidence leader had pressured him to implicate North West businessman Suliman Carrim. He also objected to being labelled a professional liar by Chaskalson during his testimony in November 2025, a label Chaskalson applied after Mogotsi admitted to lying on certain occasions during his testimony. The commission dismissed the application, and Mogotsi was arrested hours later.
Who Is Brown Mogotsi
Brown Mogotsi is a North West businessman who describes himself as a crime intelligence agent and political fixer. He became a prominent and polarising figure during testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, making explosive allegations about criminal infiltration within South Africa’s law enforcement structures including claims that KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and King Misuzulu ka Zwelithini had been recruited by the CIA. Those claims were met with significant scepticism by commissioners and legal representatives.
Mogotsi’s credibility was directly challenged during his Madlanga Commission testimony, with Chaskalson publicly describing him as a professional liar after he admitted to making false statements on multiple occasions. Despite the challenges to his credibility, Mogotsi had cultivated a significant public following on social media, where he positioned himself as a whistleblower exposing deep-state corruption.
His arrest on Friday follows a pattern of Madlanga Commission-linked figures facing criminal charges, a pattern that has seen multiple individuals arrested on Fridays in what South Africans on social media have noted has become almost a weekly occurrence since the commission began its work.
What Happens Next
Mogotsi is expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 18 May 2026. The investigation into the firearm’s links to other crimes including murder and attempted murder is ongoing and could result in additional charges being added to the matter.
Editors Note Brown Mogotsi is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. All charges referenced in this article are unproven and will be tested in court. The additional charges of unlicensed firearm possession and ammunition had not been officially confirmed by SAPS at the time of publication.
