The Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Polokwane arrested a Tshwane Metro Police Department official on Monday 17 August 2026. The Peter Nonyane TMPD arrest centres on a multi-million rand fraud and money laundering investigation. Furthermore, the 36-year-old official, known as Lamasweet, allegedly transferred funds from a deceased estate without legal authority. As a result, a serving Tshwane Metro Police official is now in custody on serious financial crime charges.
The Hawks confirmed the Peter Nonyane TMPD arrest after the Polokwane Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit worked with other specialised units. Deceased estate fraud involves accessing and moving money belonging to a deceased person’s estate without legal authority. The Hawks have not yet disclosed the full amount involved but described it as a multi-million rand matter. Furthermore, the full scale of the alleged fraud will emerge when Nonyane appears in court. As a result, South Africans watching the case will have to wait for those details.
Nonyane will appear before a Limpopo court on the charges. He faces fraud and money laundering charges. Both carry serious penalties under South African law. Furthermore, money laundering charges under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act carry a maximum sentence of 15 years or a fine of up to R100 million. As a result, Nonyane faces a potentially long prison term if a court convicts him.
What Peter Nonyane TMPD Arrest Charges Mean
The arrest of a serving metro police official on financial crime charges is serious. Metro police officers hold positions of public trust. Allegations of deceased estate fraud against such an official raise questions about systems meant to protect vulnerable estates from exploitation. Furthermore, the involvement of multiple specialised Hawks units shows investigators treated this as a serious and complex financial crime. As a result, the case will draw significant attention in both Limpopo and Pretoria.
