South Africa’s Under-20 side clinched the 2026 U20 Rugby Championship title in emphatic fashion on Sunday, dismantling Australia 56-17 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha. Argentina’s earlier upset victory over New Zealand confirmed the Junior Boks as champions before they had even finished playing.

The Junior Springboks are the 2026 U20 Rugby Championship champions. South Africa’s Under-20 side sealed the title with a round of matches still to play, producing a dominant 56-17 victory over Australia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Sunday to move onto an unassailable 10 points at the top of the log.

The title was effectively confirmed during the match itself when Argentina produced a shock 25-17 victory over New Zealand in the day’s earlier fixture, leaving both nations on four points and mathematically unable to catch South Africa regardless of the final round’s results. The Junior Boks’ final match of the tournament against the New Zealand U20s next Saturday will now be a dead rubber.

A Dominant Performance

South Africa scored eight tries to three in a performance that, while not always perfect, was ultimately a commanding statement of the Junior Boks’ superiority throughout the tournament. Australia were their own worst enemies in the first half, conceding three yellow cards including two that left them playing with 13 men as well as two penalty tries for deliberate infringements that handed South Africa a well-deserved 28-12 halftime lead.

The Junior Springboks were the first to score when winger Jack Benade raced down the touchline to finish in the corner after slick build-up play, with flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed converting. The penalty tries came when Australia’s ill-discipline around the breakdown and a deliberate slap-down by winger Taione Taka gifted the hosts further points. Wasi Vyambwera also crossed for a try as South Africa cantered to their bonus-point halftime lead.

The second half saw South Africa apply the finishing touches. Centre Ethan Adams, one of the standout players of the tournament, powered over for his try with a characteristically powerful carry, bouncing off defenders to the delight of the home crowd. Scrumhalf Hendré Schoeman, who had been outstanding throughout with his tactical kicking and alertness at the breakdown, claimed a personal reward by bouncing out of two tackles to score the sixth try. Luke Cannon and Ahmed rounded off the scoring as the Junior Boks ran out comfortable 56-17 winners.

Australia’s only genuine highlights came from the boot and footwork of Finn MacKay, who created multiple try-scoring opportunities and scored a try himself, while Riley Whitfield and Taione Taka also crossed for the visitors.

Coach Kevin Foote’s Verdict

Junior Springboks head coach Kevin Foote credited the team’s growth and grit throughout the tournament as the defining factors behind the title-winning campaign. The Junior Boks had entered the tournament on the back of a disappointing previous campaign in Gqeberha and were determined to make amends on the same ground.

The title is the first U20 Rugby Championship title South Africa has won, with the team having previously won the World Rugby U20 Championship in 2012 and again in 2025 in Italy. The U20 Rugby Championship is the southern hemisphere’s premier Under-20 competition, contested between South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Argentina.

The Road to the Title

South Africa’s path to the championship was built on consistent performances across both matches of the tournament. Their opening round victory over Argentina set the tone, and Sunday’s bonus-point win over Australia confirmed what had been apparent throughout that this Junior Springbok squad is one of the most complete and well-coached Under-20 groups the country has produced in recent years.

The title also arrives on the same weekend that South Africa’s senior relay teams claimed two silver medals at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone capping a remarkable Sunday of South African sporting achievement.

What Comes Next

The Junior Springboks will complete their tournament campaign against New Zealand next Saturday in a match that carries no title implications but will offer the squad an opportunity to end the tournament unbeaten and to continue building the foundations of what many believe will be a formidable generation of future Springboks.
