The extortion and money laundering case against taxi boss Joe Ferrari Sibanyoni and three co-accused has been reinstated on the court roll after being struck off last week when the State prosecutor and investigating officer failed to appear. The four accused are expected to present themselves at the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday 28 May 2026.
The high-profile R2 million extortion and money laundering case against prominent Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe Ferrari Sibanyoni, multi-millionaire taxi boss Bafana Sindane, Mvimbi Daniel Masilela and Philemon Msiza returns to the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday 28 May 2026. The matter was reinstated on the court roll after being struck off in embarrassing circumstances for the National Prosecuting Authority last week.
What Happened Last Week
The case collapsed on Monday 18 May 2026 after State prosecutor Mkhuseli Ntaba and the investigating officer failed to appear despite a direct court order. The non-appearance came days after the presiding magistrate publicly warned the prosecutor that she would push it down her throat if she failed to appear on Monday. A warrant of arrest was issued for Ntaba. All four accused were released after spending six days in custody.
The embarrassing development drew nationwide attention and raised serious questions about the NPA’s handling of a matter it had publicly described as a strong case just days before the collapse.
The Charges
All four accused face charges of extortion and two counts of money laundering. The case stems from a complaint laid at the Kwaggafontein Police Station in November 2025 by a Mpumalanga mining businessman. The businessman alleges that the four accused demanded more than R2 million in protection fees from him over a period spanning 2022 to 2025 and that payments were made under duress.
Who Are the Four Accused
Joe Ferrari Sibanyoni is one of Mpumalanga’s most prominent taxi industry figures. The 60-year-old businessman owns a fleet of more than 80 taxis and a collection of luxury vehicles including Ferraris and several properties across Tshwane. He brings home approximately R2 million per month and has three wives and more than 14 children. He has previously been linked to alleged crime boss Vusimuzi Cat Matlala through testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Bafana Sindane is a multi-millionaire Pretoria-based taxi boss known as the King of Sky, who became widely known on social media after a video showed him dancing with bundles of cash balanced on his head. Mvimbi Daniel Masilela and Philemon Msiza were arrested alongside Sibanyoni during the original Special Task Force operation on Tuesday 12 May 2026.
What Happens Today
The four accused are expected to present themselves at the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court today for their appearance. Whether the bail application that was never concluded during the original court proceedings will be addressed at today’s appearance had not been confirmed at the time of publication. The State has previously indicated it would oppose bail for all four accused.
