Bafana Bafana’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign has come to an end. South Africa lost 1-0 to co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday 28 June 2026. Stephen Eustáquio scored a stoppage time volley from outside the box in the 95th minute to break South African hearts. Furthermore, the match looked set for extra time before that moment of brilliance. As a result, Canada advance to the Round of 16 while South Africa exit having achieved more than any Bafana generation before them.
How the Bafana Bafana Canada World Cup Match Unfolded
The match was tight and tense throughout. Neither side created clear chances in a disciplined first half. Canada’s best opportunity came in the 21st minute when Derek Cornelius met a free kick with an unmarked header. However, Ronwen Williams reacted brilliantly to keep it out. As a result, the first half ended goalless.
South Africa grew into the match in the second half. Oswin Appollis forced a save. Bafana looked dangerous on the counter. However, Canada got a major boost in the 75th minute when Alphonso Davies came on for his first appearance of the tournament. Davies had missed the entire group stage with a hamstring injury. His impact was immediate. He set up Promise David for a golden chance but the striker fired wide.
The match entered five minutes of stoppage time at 0-0. Extra time seemed certain. Then in the 95th minute Eustáquio received the ball outside the box and struck a stunning volley into the bottom corner. The SoFi Stadium erupted. Bafana were out. Canada were through.
A Goal That Ended Everything
Eustáquio’s goal was a moment of pure brilliance. The midfielder plays for Los Angeles FC just a few miles from the stadium. He struck the ball with perfect technique and gave Williams no chance. Canada coach Jesse Marsch gathered his players after the whistle. “You guys are Canadian heroes,” he told them. Furthermore, Eustáquio was emotional after the match. “We just kept believing, we just kept pushing. I thought it was an amazing goal,” he said through tears.
South Africa Leave With Their Heads High
The scoreline told only part of the story. Bafana matched Canada in almost every area for 95 minutes. They defended with the same composure that carried them through the group stage. They created chances. Furthermore, they represented South Africa with honour and quality against a co-host nation playing in front of a home crowd. As a result, South Africa’s exit is not a failure. It is the end of the greatest World Cup campaign Bafana Bafana has ever produced.
What Bafana Bafana Achieved at the 2026 World Cup
South Africa arrived in Mexico having never reached the knockout round. They lost their opener 2-0 to Mexico with two red cards and finished with nine men. Most wrote them off. However, they drew 1-1 with Czechia in Atlanta. Then they beat South Korea 1-0 in Monterrey to reach the Round of 32 for the first time in history. Furthermore, they pushed co-hosts Canada to a 95th minute winner in the knockout round. As a result, Bafana leave this tournament as heroes.
Teboho Mokoena’s penalty against Czechia. Thapelo Maseko’s goal against South Korea. Hugo Broos on his knees at the final whistle in Monterrey. Ronwen Williams’ heroic saves throughout. Relebohile Mofokeng’s brilliance from start to finish. These are the moments South Africa will remember long after the World Cup trophy goes to someone else.
