South African Grammy Award-winning superstar Tyla has joined the voice cast of Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5. The Tyla Toy Story 5 role sees her voice a brand-new character called Inflatable Flamingo in the Sub-Saharan African version of the film. Furthermore, she becomes the first African artist to voice a character in the beloved Toy Story franchise. Toy Story 5 opens in South African cinemas on Friday 19 June 2026.

Tyla Toy Story 5 Role: What Was Announced

Disney and Pixar confirmed the announcement on Tuesday 9 June 2026. Tyla voices the character of Inflatable Flamingo exclusively for Sub-Saharan African audiences. The role is a regional cameo, meaning different markets receive different voice talent for the same character. In the United Kingdom, broadcaster Siân Welby voices the same Inflatable Flamingo character. Therefore, South African and African audiences will hear Tyla while UK viewers hear a different voice entirely.

Tyla expressed genuine emotion about the opportunity. “Toy Story has been such a special part of my childhood, so being part of this film is a full-circle moment for me. I’m incredibly excited for audiences to experience it and it means so much to know that African viewers will hear an African voice bringing one of these beloved characters to life,” she said in a statement released by Disney.

The Star-Studded Cast Tyla Is Joining

Tyla joins one of the most impressive voice casts in recent animated film history. Tom Hanks returns as Woody. Tim Allen is back as Buzz Lightyear. Joan Cusack reprises her role as Jessie. Furthermore, Annie Potts returns as Bo Peep alongside Tony Hale as Forky and Keanu Reeves as daredevil Duke Caboom. New additions include Greta Lee as Lilypad, the film’s central villain, and Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, a toilet-training tech toy. Ernie Hudson joins as Combat Carl, stepping into the role following the death of Carl Weathers. As a result, the film features one of the most talked-about ensemble casts in the franchise’s history.

What Toy Story 5 Is About

Toy Story 5 carries the tagline Toy Meets Tech. The film’s central conflict pits Woody, Buzz and the gang against the growing dominance of electronic devices in children’s lives. Director Andrew Stanton has described the theme as toy versus technology. Greta Lee’s Lilypad is a brand-new tablet device who serves as the film’s central antagonist, representing the tech world that threatens to make traditional toys obsolete. Furthermore, Taylor Swift contributed an original song to the soundtrack titled I Knew It, I Knew You, a country-influenced track centred on Jessie that has already generated significant online attention.

The film holds its world premiere in Los Angeles on Tuesday 9 June 2026. It then opens in South African and Sub-Saharan African cinemas on Friday 19 June 2026. Toy Story 5 lands seventeen years after Toy Story 3 and seven years after Toy Story 4.

A Full-Circle Moment for Tyla

For Tyla, the Disney announcement is the latest in a remarkable run of international milestones. The 24-year-old Johannesburg-born artist has accumulated a Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, two American Music Awards for Best Afrobeats Artist and Social Song of the Year, and a global fanbase that has propelled her music across every continent. She also contributed a track to the Smurfs movie soundtrack in 2025 alongside international stars, giving her prior experience in the world of animation soundtracks.

Furthermore, Tyla and American rapper Future recently released a new single called Game Time as part of the official soundtrack for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The announcement of her Toy Story 5 role therefore adds to an already extraordinary week for one of South Africa’s most celebrated entertainers. As a result, her journey from a young Johannesburg girl who grew up watching Toy Story to becoming a voice in the franchise itself is a story that has resonated deeply with South African audiences online.

Why This Matters for African Representation

Tyla’s role as Inflatable Flamingo marks the first time an African artist has voiced a character in the Toy Story franchise in its thirty-year history. Disney and Pixar’s decision to use region-specific voice talent reflects a broader strategy to deepen connections between global franchises and local audiences. Furthermore, it signals growing recognition by major Hollywood studios that African markets represent significant and culturally engaged audiences who respond to seeing themselves represented in global entertainment.

South Africans have welcomed the announcement with enormous pride and enthusiasm. Commentary across social media reflects the view that Tyla’s Toy Story 5 role is not just a personal achievement but a milestone for African representation in global entertainment. As a result, ticket sales for the 19 June opening in South Africa are expected to be strong, with many families already planning to attend specifically to hear Tyla’s voice on screen.
