EFF leader Julius Malema has urged young South Africans to watch Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi’s African Renaissance Podcast instead of Podcast and Chill with MacG. The Malema MacG Ndlozi podcast debate erupted on Thursday 30 July 2026 when Malema urged young South Africans to ditch MacG’s platform entirely. As a result, one of South Africa’s most popular podcast platforms is now at the centre of a political debate.

Malema was direct in his criticism. He said Podcast and Chill promotes a drinking culture and depoliticises the youth. He argued that MacG’s conversations keep young people distracted from real issues like unemployment, inequality and political accountability. Furthermore, he said Ndlozi’s African Renaissance Podcast offers the kind of discussion young South Africans actually need. As a result, Malema framed the choice between the two platforms as a choice between political awareness and distraction.

Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi is a former EFF MP and one of the party’s most prominent intellectual voices. He left the National Assembly after the 2024 elections but remained active through his podcast and social media. The African Renaissance Podcast covers Pan-Africanism, Black consciousness, political philosophy and African history. Furthermore, it has built a dedicated following among young South Africans interested in political education. As a result, the Malema MacG Ndlozi podcast debate is likely to boost Ndlozi’s reach significantly.

MacG, real name Macgyver Mukwevho, built one of South Africa’s largest and most successful podcasting platforms. Podcast and Chill draws major guests from entertainment, business and sport and pulls millions of views per episode. Its content ranges from celebrity interviews to social commentary. However, critics have argued the platform puts entertainment above substance. Furthermore, MacG has faced controversy over statements made on his show before. As a result, Malema’s attack is not the first time Podcast and Chill has faced criticism over its influence on young South Africans.

South Africans have reacted across the full spectrum. Supporters of Ndlozi’s podcast welcomed the endorsement. Many others pushed back, arguing that entertainment has its own value and that young people can watch both platforms. Furthermore, some pointed out that the EFF itself has used entertainment, spectacle and social media virality to build its own brand. As a result, Malema’s criticism of MacG for entertaining rather than educating drew charges of hypocrisy from several quarters.
