A man died after gunmen shot him outside an apartment complex in Kempton Park on Wednesday 16 September 2026. The Kempton Park road rage shooting started as a minor car collision before 10h00. The victim stopped his black Toyota Etios outside the complex. Two unidentified suspects in a white Honda pulled up and opened fire. Furthermore, CCTV footage shows one suspect approached the victim as he tried to flee and shot him multiple times. As a result, paramedics declared the man dead at the scene.

A 47-year-old man travelling with the victim took a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Paramedics took him to Arwyp Medical Centre for treatment. Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Dipuo Ditshego confirmed the shooting. Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the complex and nearby businesses. Furthermore, the suspects’ white Honda registration could not be identified and their faces are not clearly visible in the footage. As a result, police are sourcing additional CCTV while the motive remains unknown.

Road rage incidents are a growing problem on South African roads. Firearms now appear in a growing number of confrontations that start as minor traffic disputes. Kempton Park and the East Rand have seen several such incidents in recent years. Wednesday’s shooting shows how fast a minor collision can turn fatal. Furthermore, the passenger who also took a bullet shows that bystanders pay the price when armed people take their aggression to the streets. As a result, road rage is a public safety emergency that deserves urgent attention.

The shooting adds to a deeply troubled chapter for Kempton Park. The city drew national attention since July 2026 following the murders of nine women whose bodies turned up across Ekurhuleni over two months. President Cyril Ramaphosa declared the women’s murders a national crisis. Gauteng authorities placed Kempton Park under lockdown with army support alongside SAPS. Furthermore, the DA pledged an additional R500,000 on top of the R400,000 SAPS reward. The total reward for information in the women’s murders now stands at R900,000. As a result, Kempton Park is dealing with two separate but equally alarming crime crises at once.

The road rage investigation is at an early stage. Sergeant Ditshego appealed to witnesses to come forward. “We understand that some witnesses may fear coming forward. Information can be provided anonymously and any detail, no matter how small, could assist investigators,” Ditshego said. Furthermore, Acting Station Commander Colonel Motsatsi Lesomo is supervising the investigation. As a result, anyone with information is urged to contact Kempton Park SAPS directly.
