IDAC head Advocate Andrea Johnson appeared before the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday 21 July 2026. The Andrea Johnson Madlanga Commission testimony followed her hospitalisation a week earlier and a subpoena from the commission. Furthermore, Johnson told the commission that the complaints against Crime Intelligence officers paint a picture of State Capture. As a result, her testimony has produced one of the most significant statements heard by the commission since it began in July 2025.

Andrea Johnson Madlanga Commission: What She Said

Johnson testified that the IDAC complaints against Crime Intelligence officers suggest a pattern of State Capture. She defended IDAC’s conduct and pushed back against suggestions the directorate acted outside its mandate. Furthermore, she said the cases involve serious offences including fraud and defeating the ends of justice. As a result, Johnson told the commission IDAC was targeted precisely because it was doing its job.

Johnson also denied leaking a criminal docket to suspended Crime Intelligence deputy head Major General Feroz Khan. Furthermore, Tuesday’s proceedings revealed that IDAC removed all matters relating to NCC MP Fadiel Adams’ complaints from Johnson’s desk. She told the commission she asked to be relieved of those duties. As a result, Johnson’s testimony was still ongoing at the time of publication.

The Dramatic Build-Up to the Andrea Johnson Madlanga Commission Appearance

Johnson was scheduled to testify on Monday 13 July 2026. However, her protectors called her legal team on the way to the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College to say she was being rushed to hospital. Her team submitted a medical certificate booking her off from 13 to 15 July. Furthermore, Commission chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga dismissed the certificate publicly. “It’s just one of those useless, so-called medical certificates,” Madlanga said. As a result, the commission issued a subpoena to compel Johnson to appear.

Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed on Friday 17 July that Johnson had returned to work. “As the head of IDAC, Adv Johnson is a key witness in relation to serious allegations levelled at the NPA and it is therefore important that she appears before the commission,” Michaels said. As a result, Johnson entered the witness box on Tuesday facing serious allegations about her office and her fitness to hold her position.

The Allegations Johnson Faces at the Andrea Johnson Madlanga Commission Inquiry

The most significant allegation is that Johnson gave Feroz Khan access to a criminal docket before investigators could take his warning statement. A whistleblower email from eight years ago placed her at the centre of that allegation. One official had refused to delete it as instructed, keeping it alive. Furthermore, the Hawks investigated Johnson for allegedly obstructing justice. Hawks investigator Captain Mark McLean confirmed that by May 2026 a prosecutor was reviewing whether to charge her. As a result, Johnson faces both commission scrutiny and possible criminal charges.

Johnson also faced criticism over her husband Junaid Johnson’s appointment at the now-defunct Directorate of Special Operations, the Scorpions. Furthermore, senior IDAC officials who testified before her described an organisation torn apart by divisions, corruption and intimidation. As a result, Johnson walked into the witness box as head of an institution her own officials had called deeply dysfunctional.

What Else Happened at the Commission Today

Tuesday’s proceedings also heard Julius Mkhwanazi claim his former lover Witness K testified spitefully against him. Mkhwanazi made this claim in his bail affidavit for the precious stones matter. Furthermore, the commission expects to hear the secret testimony of the mysterious Witness M in the coming days. As a result, the Madlanga Commission keeps generating explosive revelations on multiple fronts.
