Police in Mpumalanga have arrested seven suspects in connection with a Brondal house robbery outside Mbombela. Officers made the arrests in Mataffin, and they also recovered a stolen Toyota Land Cruiser in Lows Creek.
A multidisciplinary police team carried out the operation after the robbery. According to police, six of the suspects are Mozambican nationals. The seventh suspect is a South African citizen.
Officers found the stolen Land Cruiser in Lows Creek along with other goods police believe were taken. Investigators are now working to confirm whether all the recovered items belong to the victims.
Brondal house robbery suspects due in court on Monday
The seven suspects will appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 19 October. They face charges of house robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.
Police have not named the suspects. Usually, names become public once suspects appear in court and the charges are formally read.
For readers who do not know the area, Brondal is a farming and smallholding area just north of Mbombela, the capital of Mpumalanga. Many families live on large plots there, often some distance from their neighbours.
Mataffin, where police made the arrests, is a fast growing settlement on the western edge of Mbombela. Lows Creek, on the other hand, lies east of the city. It sits not far from the N4 route that leads to the Lebombo border post with Mozambique.
House robberies remain a serious concern in the Mbombela area. Unlike burglaries, house robberies happen while the occupants are at home. As a result, victims often face threats or violence from the attackers.
In addition, police in Mpumalanga have often warned about syndicates that target large vehicles such as Land Cruisers. Investigators will likely look into whether the suspects are linked to other robberies in the province.
Meanwhile, commentary across social media platforms has welcomed the arrests. Many residents have praised the police team and called for tough action against house robbers.
Police have urged anyone with information about the robbery or the suspects to contact their nearest police station.
