Rhythm City eTV Return: The Details
Rhythm City officially returns as a rerun on eTV Extra, Channel 195 on DStv. The show airs daily at 11:20am. It ended five years ago in 2021 after a 14-year run. Furthermore, its return gives fans the chance to go back and revisit some of the most memorable moments in South African television history.
The show built its reputation around the lives of people chasing their dreams in the music industry. It became one of eTV’s most successful original productions. As a result, its cancellation in 2021 left a significant gap in local television that many viewers have felt ever since.
A Show That Defined a Generation
Rhythm City first aired on eTV on 9 July 2007. It replaced the youth soapie Backstage in the early evening timeslot. The show quickly found a massive audience. Furthermore, it became a launching pad for numerous South African actors and musicians over the years.
The production was deeply affected by tragedy in August 2017. Cast member Dumi Masilela was killed in a hijacking. His death shook the cast, crew and viewers across the country. Furthermore, a special episode was filmed in his memory to honour his contribution to the show.
When eTV announced the show would not be renewed in 2021, the response from viewers was immediate and emotional. Many took to social media to express their disappointment. However, the final episode aired and the show closed its doors after 14 years.
How to Watch
DStv subscribers with access to eTV Extra on Channel 195 can tune in daily at 11:20am. Therefore, both long-time fans and new viewers have the opportunity to experience one of South Africa’s most iconic television dramas from the beginning.
